On 7 April the Care Quality Commission visited Three Corners to carry out one of their unannounced inspections. The inspector was very complimentary about the home and particularly remarked on cleanlines, laundry, visitors' comments, food and the overall quality of care.  We are expecting at least a two star, very good rating and the draft report should be available in a few weeks. New Primary Care Trust Project for Three Corners

11/12/2009

We are delighted to have been chosen as one of only three out of over 200 homes in Torbay to take part in an End of Life Project. This will help us build on our already excellent reputation for end of life care. All staff are currently using the nationally recognised Liverpool Care Pathway, leading to a more comfortable end of life for our residents and in turn their families.

The project recognises this work and will establish an even closer working relationship with doctors and other health professionals, allowing residents to be more informed about their care for the last year of their life.

This will be achieved by the End of Life Facilitator, Louise Davis from the Torbay Primary Care Trust, working closely with our staff. Louise will arrange specialist trainers to help with the training and oversee the knowledge gained, ensuring our residents get the best possible care at perhaps the most difficult time of their lives.

Three Corners supports Children in Need

Children in Need pic

Last week Three Corners staff challenged themselves to beat last year's Children In Need Total of £145. Having put together some very wise and some not so wise heads they decided to do a series of events on the same day.

These included staff paying to come in in fancy dress, most came in pyjamas, and visitors swelled the coffers by applauding their efforts. There was a very hard quiz based on old money. Unfortunately most of the staff were born after decimalisation - what is a sixpence anyway? Finally, visitors paid to have meals with their relatives.

There was a real buzz about the home, and everyone was swept up in the enthusiam of the day. Three Corners staff led by activities coordinators, Kim and Sue, raised over £200, and a great day was had by all. Well done.

Award for infection control

11/11/2009

Three Corners is one one of only ten homes in the Torbay area to receive an "Essential Steps" award for effective infection control.

For the last 14 months all care, nursing and domestic staff at Three Corners have been working with the Community Infection Control team to raise awareness of infection control and understand how to reduce the possibility of infections spreading. They have looked at all aspects of their work, including hand washing, clothing, care of catheters and changing dressings. They have even looked at cleaning products to ensure they use the ones that are most effective at killing bacteria and viruses.

The team will continue to build on the training and regularly update all staff to ensure knowledge stays current and that Three Corners continues to deliver first class levels of care.

Development complete

The final stages in the major redevelopment of Three Corners were launched this month with representatives from local care trusts, our bank, advisors and of course the home itself. Over £400,000 has been spent in building two extensions, creating new bedrooms, refurbishing existing rooms and creating a state of the art day space for dining, recreational activities and lounge. Even the outside of the building has been improved with new gardens and repainting.

The developments bring the total number of beds to 46 with more single rooms and en-suite bathrooms. There has been particular emphasis on creating naturally well lit spaces and the use of bright colours for visual stimulation. The lounge/dining area features mood lighting, a virtual aquarium, family meeting, reading and television spaces. All rooms have been furnished to a very high standard and to make life as enjoyable as possible for our residents and patients.

Externally there are new landscaped gardens to both the front and rear, including a waist level sensory garden, with fragrant herbs for the visually impaired. The whole of the exterior has been transformed by the use of a new colour scheme of sunshine yellow, consistent with the local “English Riviera” look and uplifting for visitors and residents alike.

No cutting corners as extension opens

15/07/2008

The Three Corners Nursing Home celebrated the formal opening of a new extension, which was completed with a funding package from banking partners Natwest.

Owners Nick Meyer and David Henson acquired the home on the outskirts of Galmpton last year in a deal which was also funded through Natwest.

The extension has expanded the number of beds from 40 to 43. In addition, the majority of the existing single and double bedrooms have been refurbished completely and two new assisted wet rooms have been installed.

A new lounge area for residents is in the final stages of completion. The opening of the extension was celebrated in the company of local doctors, nurses, Primary Care Trust members, Natwest staff and the residents and their families.

Extract from the Herald Express newspaper:

We hear so much about nursing homes and hospitals, I felt on behalf of my sister and myself I must write about Three Corners Nursing Home, Greenway Road, Churston Ferrers.

All the staff were absolutely wonderful, caring and kind, to my very dear friend and companion Bill. They have an exceptionally difficult job to do, under very trying circumstances, and work long hours.

We also got to know a lot of patients, one in particular called 'Mo Mo', who has lost both her legs due to illness (brave lady). Members of the staff and 'Mo Mo' attended Bill's funeral.

To everyone at Three Corners Nursing Home, a big thank-you.

Three Corners under new management

10/09/2007

We are delighted to have become the new owners of Three Corners Nursing Home and would like to introduce ourselves to residents, their families, staff, our suppliers and all those who work with and support Three Corners to deliver the best patient care in Torbay.

Firstly we would like to pay tribute to Liz Hunter who over 20 years of ownership has built Three Corners into one of the best nursing homes in Devon. Throughout this time Liz has shown tremendous passion and dedication, and we know how difficult it has been for her to decide to take her well earned retirement. We wish her the very best with a long and happy future.

It seems appropriate to state our aims for Three Corners. Our goals are very simple and can be summarised as:

  1. To maintain the very best nursing and care staff to give residents an outstanding quality of care.
  2. To achieve the highest standards of resident care, recognised by residents, their families and the care authorities.
  3. To continue to develop Three Corners to upgrade the quality of the accommodation and facilities to provide the best possible service to residents.

We have between us over 60 years in client facing service companies and know that success is achieved by providing clients with the best possible service, and are passionate about delivering that at Three Corners. Nick will have day to day involvement in Three Corners and is the "responsible person", whilst David will have an active interest through Nick but without a day to day presence. All other staff continue as currently, led superbly by the home's registered manager Vicky Bundy.

We do hope to meet everyone involved in Three Corners as soon as practicable, and are delighted and very grateful for the response we have received so far. We look forward to continuing the success of Three Corners in providing the best in nursing home care.
